With 2025 marking 200 years since the birth of the modern railway, this year’s World Cup of Stations will see us celebrate the most life-changing station of the last 200 years.

This theme will spotlight the many stations that have touched lives in unforgettable ways, from moments of hope and heroism to new beginnings.

Our very own station has made it into the Top 20 and what a journey it's been on:-
Merthyr Tydfil – A Historic Steam Engine Journey
In 1804, the world’s first steam-hauled railway journey took place near Merthyr Tydfil Station, between Penydarren Ironworks in Merthyr Tydfil to Abercynon, using Richard Trevithick’s pioneering locomotive. This groundbreaking run proved that steam could move heavy loads on rails and marked the dawn of the railway age.Merthyr Tydfil is also home to the Pont-y-Cafnau, the world’s oldest surviving iron railway bridge, built in 1793 to serve the town’s iron industry. Some of the original tracks from Trevithick’s historic journey are preserved at a memorial in Merthyr, a lasting reminder of the town’s pivotal role in railway history.

PLEASE VOTE, let's get our station to the number one spot !!

As part of improving our grant application process we have launched online Teams-based Pre-Application Advice Sessions.  These sessions will allow groups to learn more about our eligibility criteria, whether their work aligns with local funding priorities, and the types of funding programmes currently available.

Any organisation wishing to apply need to attend one of these sessions to have their application considered.  If organisations have been previously funded or are current grant holders planning to apply again they will need to attend a session before submitting a new application.

This is quite a change from the previous model where organisations were able to apply directly without any contact with the Wales team.  We would be grateful if you could inform any interested organisations about this change.  More information and dates for the sessions are now online and can be booked via our website:
