Invest Local is a 10-year programme providing £1 million in funding and support to 13 communities across Wales. Funded by the Building Communities Trust and the National Lottery Community Fund, the initiative empowers local people to make their communities better places to live through consultation, action, and collaboration.
In Merthyr Tydfil, Invest Local Ynysowen serves the areas of Aberfan, Merthyr Vale, and Mount Pleasant. Since its inception, the local steering group has made fantastic strides in community engagement, volunteering, and project delivery.
VAMT (Voluntary Action Merthyr Tydfil) employs the local Community Development Officer, working in close partnership with the steering group and wider community organisations.
Our Project Objectives:
Activities for children, young people, and older adults
Improved transport options
Better communication and engagement across the community
Enhanced use of community buildings and facilities
A safer, cleaner, and greener environment
Looking Ahead – Our Plans for the Future:
Collaborate with YES – Ynysowen Events and Social Group to develop a funding and sustainability strategy, and support key events like the 2025 Ynysowen Carnival and Christmas Fayre
Continue weekly drop-in sessions at Aberfan Community Centre – every Tuesday, 10am–12pm
Offer ongoing support to local groups with funding, governance, and more
Develop a local ‘What’s On’ guide to improve awareness of events and activities
Expand youth engagement by introducing new activities and understanding their needs
Promote community pride by enhancing green spaces through litter picking, flower bombing, wildflower planting, bulb planting, street art, and more
